Lay and Lie

            การใช้ Lay และ Lie ค่อนข้างสับสนเนื่องจากมีความหมายที่คล้ายกัน, และคำทั้งสองเป็นกิริยาด้วยกันทั้งคู่. อย่างไรก็ตาม, Lay เป็น transitive verb หรือ สกรรมกิริยา, ซึ่งคือกิริยาที่ต้องมีกรรม (with object). แต่ Lie คือ intransitive verb หรือ อกรรมกิริยา, ซึ่งคือกิริยาที่ไม่ต้องมีกรรม (no object). หลักการใช้ Lay และ Lie มีดังนี้:

            Lay (transitive verb) หรือ วาง. หมายความว่าคุณต้องวางบางสิ่งบนบางสิ่ง. ตัวอย่าง:
Ex1: She “lays” her hand on my shoulder. หล่อนวางมือของหล่อนบนบ่าของฉัน.
Ex2: I will “lay” my head on the pillow. ฉันจะเอาหัวของฉันวางบนหมอน.
Ex3: He “laid” the money on the table. เขาได้วางเงินบนโต๊ะ.

            Lie (intransitive verb) หรือ นอนหลง, หมอบ, พิง, แต่ไม่ต้องมี object. กิริยาสามช่องคือ Lie Lay Lain. ตัวอย่าง:
Ex1: When I came home, I saw him was “lying” (on the floor, in bed). เมื่อฉันมาบ้าน, ฉันเห็นเขานอนแนวราบ, ซึ่งคุณอาจจะเติม on the floor หรือ in bed เพื่อความกระจ่าง.
Ex2: The dog was “lying” dead on the floor. หมานอนตายบนพื้น.
Ex3: Almost every night I “lie awake” in bed thinking about you. เกือบแทบทุกคืนฉัน “lie awake” หรือ นอนตื่น คือ นอนไม่หลับบนเตียงคิดถึงเธอ.

*** เมื่อไรที่คุณใช้ Lay, คุณต้องมีสิ่งของเพื่อที่จะวางลง. เช่น: 1) I lay him down. 2) Lay me down. 3) Lay it on the table.  

ตัวอย่างการใช้ Lay และ Lie ที่ผิด:

- Let's lie our picnic blanket down here. INCORRECT ถูกต้องคือ LAY เพราะผ้าห่มถูกวางลง
- My dog likes to lay on my bed. INCORRECT ถูกต้องคือ LIE เพราะนอนเอง
- I will lay here until the headache goes away.  INCORRECT ถูกต้องคือ LIE เพราะนอนเอง
- She came home and he was laying on the ground. INCORRECT ถูกต้องคือ LYING เพราะนอนเอง

*** หลักการจำ Lay และ Lie ***

- Today, you “lay” the book on the table. Yesterday, you “laid” the book on the table. In the past, you have “laid” the book on the table.

- Today, you need to “lie” down. Yesterday, you “lay” down. In the past you have “lain” down.
