Food

           การบริโภคอาหารเป็นสิ่งที่โปรดปรานของทุกคน,เพราะเราต้องการพลังงานจากการกินเพื่อการดํารงชีพ. อาหาร หรือ Food: ฟู๊ด: things that people and animals eat, such as “vegetables” (เฝ็จทะเบิ่ลส์) or meat. อาหารจานโปรด (favorite dish: เฟ๊ฝริท ดิฉ) ของผมคือตํามะละกอ (papaya: ผ๊ะพายหยะ) และแคร็อท (carrot: แค๊รัท). เวลาผมสั่งส้มตํา, ผมจะขอพริก 3 เม็ด, 3 สี- ชีวิตคนเราต้องมีสีสันและสารพัดรส; ผมจะไม่ให้ใส่นํ้าตาล, แต่จะขอความหวานของแม่ค้าแทน; ไม่งั้น, ผมอาจจะถูกสากตีปากเพราะสั่งกวน. สาเหตุที่ผมสั่ง 3 เม็ด, เพราะผมกินเผ็ดไม่ใหวเนื่องจากปราศจากหวานใจทานด้วย. ถ้าผมมีหวานใจเมื่อใด, พริกหมื่นเม็ดก็คงไม่เผ็ดเท่าไรหรอก. ก่อนทานตํามะละกอหรือแคร็อท, ผมจะใส่ตู้เย็นไว้อย่างน้อย 2 ชั่วโมงแล้วกิน. และถ้ากินกับ pork chops, หมูย่าง, เนื้อทอด, ข้าว, และ ดื่มไวน์ขาว หรือ “Zinfandel” (ซิ๊นฟันเดล: a type of ros? wine made in the US, especially in California) จะอร่อยมากเลย; โดยเฉพาะทานกับคนที่คุณรัก- แม้ว่าบุคคลนั้นจะไม่รักคุณเพียงสักนิด, และผู้ที่สุดแสนพิเศษของคุณนั้นอาจจะทานไม่อร่อยเมื่อเจอหน้าคุณ.

     สิ่งที่กินได้คือ Edible: เอ็ดดะเบิ่ล: adj: something that is edible can be eaten.
Ex: These apples are edible, but those are “poisonous” (พ้อยซะหนัส adj: containing poison or producing poison: มีพิษหรือทําให้มีพิษ.
Ex: Don't drink that -- it's poisonous!
Ex: She was bitten on the ankle by a poisonous snake). แอ๊ปเปิ่ลเหล่านี้กินได้, แต่เหล่านั้นเป็นพิษ.
Ex: Is this chicken “jambalaya” (แจมบ๊ะลาหยะ: a dish from the “southern” [ซั๊ธเธริ่น] US, containing rice and seafood) edible? ไก่แจมบ๊ะลาหยะกินได้ไหม (ยังไม่เสียใช่ใหม)?  
ส่วนอาหารที่กินไม่ได้ซึ่งเน่าเสียก็มีศัพท์ที่น่าสนใจอยู่หลายคํา

1) Go bad/go off: especially spoken: if food goes off or goes bad, it starts to decay because it has been kept for too long. ภาษาพูด: อาหารที่เสียคืออาหารที่เน่าเปื่อยเพราะถูกเก็บไว้นานเกินไป.
Ex: The bread's gone moldy=1:ที่เป็นรา, 2: ที่เน่าเปื่อย.
Ex: This milk has gone bad. นมได้เสียแล้ว.
Ex: Can you smell this milk and see if you think it's gone off? คุณดมนมนี้สิและดูว่ามันเสียหรือยัง? ส่วนมากผมได้ยินเจ้าของภาษาใช้ go bad มากกว่า go off.

2) Stale: adj Bread, cake etc that is stale is hard, dry, and unpleasant to eat: บูด. ขนมปัง, เค้ก ฯลฯ ซึ่ง สเตล นั้น แข็ง, แห้ง, และ ไม่น่ากิน.
Ex: French bread goes stale very quickly. ขนมปังฝรั่งเศสแข็ง-แห้ง-เสียเร็วมาก.

2.1) Stale ยังมีอีกความหมายซึ่งไม่เกี่ยวกับอาหาร: not interesting or exciting any more. ไม่น่าสนใจหรือตื่นเต้นอีกแล้ว.
Ex: If you stay in the job for more than 10 years, you   get stale.
Ex: He was becoming stale and running out of ideas.
Ex: After 1 year, their marriage began to go stale. หลังจาก  1 ปี, ชีวิตแต่งงานของพวกเขาเริ่มน่าเบื่อ (ต่างคนต่างเบื่อกัน/เบื่อชีวิตคู่).

3) Sour เซาเอ่อะ ออกเสียงเอ่อะเบาๆ: milk, cream, wine etc that is sour tastes bitter and smells unpleasant. นม, ครีม, ไวน์ ซึ่ง เซาเอ่อะ มีรสขมและมีกลิ่นที่ไม่พึงปรารถนา- รสเปรี้ยว.
Ex: Rachel sampled the wine. It was sour. เรเช่ลลองไวน์. มันขม(เสีย).
Ex: In this “temperature” (เท็มผระเฉ่อะ), milk goes sour very quickly. ในอุณหภูมิอย่างนี้, นมจะเสียอย่างรวดเร็วมาก.
3.1) Turn/go sour ยังเป็นสํานวนซึ่งมีความหมาย: Informal: if a relationship or plan turns or goes sour, it becomes less enjoyable, pleasant, or satisfactory. ถ้าความสัมพันธ์ หรือ แผนการ เทริน/โก เซาเอ่อะ, ความเพลิดเพลิน, ความพอใจ, หรือ ความน่าพอใจ ได้ลดลง.
Ex: As time went by, their marriage turned sour. เวลาผ่านไป, ชีวิตสมรสของพวกเขาที่มีสุขได้ลดน้อยถอยลง.
Ex: In this case, the relationship turned sour. ในกรณีนี้, ความสัมพันธ์ไม่ดี.

4) Rotten: ร็อททึ่น: fruit, vegetables, meat etc that is rotten is very badly decayed, has gone soft, smells unpleasant, and cannot be eaten. ผลไม้, ผัก, เนื้อ ฯลฯ ซึ่งเน่า เสื่อมลงอย่างมาก, ได้อ่อนลง, มีกลิ่นที่ไม่พึงปรารถนา, และ ไม่สามารถที่จะกินได้: เน่า เปื่อย ผุ.

4 .1) Rotten ยังมีความหมาย Informal: very bad: เลว/แย่มาก.

     เวลาที่คนป่วย, เครียด, ผิดหวัง, เศร้า, ฯลฯ จะไม่อยากกินอะไรเพราะต่อมความหิวและความกระหายถูกปิดตาย. ในทางตรงกันข้าง, คนจํานวนไม่น้อยยิ่งเครียดมากยิ่งกินมาก. การไม่อยากอาหารคือ Lose your “appetite” (แอ็พเพอะไถ้: a desire for food): to no longer want to eat anything, especially because you are upset, sick, or thinking about something else. ไม่มีความต้องการกินอะไร, เพราะคุณเสียใจ, ป่วย, หรือ กําลังคิดเกี่ยวกับบางสิ่ง.
Ex: I seem to have lost my appetite lately since my dearest bunny has left me. ช่วงนี้ผมไม่อยากกินอะไรตั้งแต่กระต่ายที่ผมรักดั่งดวงใจได้จากผมไป.
Ex: “Symptoms” (สิ๊มตั่ม: a physical condition which shows that you have a particular sickness) include headaches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. ความป่วยประกอบด้วยการปวดหัว, ความเหนื่อย, และ อาการไม่อยากอาหาร.

     หลังจากการที่ไม่ได้กินอะไรเลยมาเป็นเวลานาน, คุณน่าจะมีอาการที่ “หิวอย่างมาก”. มีศัพท์ 3 คําซึ่งมีความหมาย หิวอย่างมาก หรือ extremely hungry คือ 1) Starving: สต๊าร์ฝฝิ่ง/ 2) Ravenous: แร๊ฝะหนัส/ 3) Famished: แฟ๊มิฉถึ also starved: สต๊าร์ฝ American  [adj not before noun] spoken: very hungry.
Ex: What's for dinner? I'm starved/starving. มีอะไรสําหรับอาหารเย็น? ฉันหิวอย่างมาก.
Ex: When I woke up this morning, I was absolutely ravenous. เมื่อฉันตื่นขึ้นเช้านี้, ฉันหิวอย่างมาก.
Ex: I missed lunch and I'm famished. ฉันไม่ได้ทานอาหารเที่ยงและฉันหิวอย่างมาก. ถ้าคุณอยากจะพูดว่าหิวจะตายแล้ว, ใช้สํานวนนี้ครับ “I am starved/starving to death”.

     ถ้าหากคุณ “หิวนิดหน่อย”, คุณควรใช้คําเหล่านี้:
1) Peckish adj เพ็กกิฉ British English informal: slightly hungry. อังกฤษ แบบชาวอังกฤษ: หิวนิดหน่อย.
Ex: She was feeling a bit peckish. หล่อนกําลังรู้สึกหิวนิดหน่อย.
Ex: I'm feeling a bit peckish. What's in the fridge? ฉันกําลังรู้สึกหิวนิดหน่อย. มีอะไรในตู้เย็น? แต่อเมริกันจะใช้คํานี้
2) The munchies: have/get the munchies: American English informal: to begin to feel a little hungry, and want something to eat, especially food that is not healthy for you. Foods that are easy to pick up and eat, especially foods served at a party. อังกฤษ อเมริกัน: รู้สึกหิวนิดหน่อย, และต้องการกินบางสิ่ง, โดยเฉพาะอาหารที่ไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพของคุณ. อาหารที่หยิบง่ายและทานง่าย, โดยเฉพาะอาหารที่ถูกนํามาให้ทานที่งานสังสรรค์.
Ex1: Get me a back of chips - I have the munchies. ขอมันฝรั่งถุง - ฉันเริ่มหิวนิดหน่อย.
Ex: If you get the munchies later on there are some snacks in the kitchen. ถ้าเธอเริ่มจะหิวนิดหน่อยในภายหลังมีของขบเคี้ยวในครัวนะ.
Ex: When Amornie has the munchies, he always gets himself a bag of chips. เมื่ออาม๊อร์นี่มีอาการหิวนิดหน่อย, เขาจะไปเอาถุงของมันฝรั่งให้แก่ตัวเองเสมอ.

     ผมเป็นคนชอบกินมันฝรั่งมากและได้แต่งตั้งตัวเองเป็น “King of Potatoes” หรือ กษัตริย์ของมันฝรั่ง เมื่อสิบปีที่แล้ว. การแต่งตั้งตัวเองคือ “Self-proclaimed” adj: having given yourself a position or title without the approval or agreement of other people.
Ex: Amornie is the self-proclaimed King of Potatoes. อาม๊อร์นี่แต่งตั้งตัวเองเป็นกษัตริย์ของมันฝรั่ง.  อย่างไรก็ตาม, ผมยังไม่ได้รับการทาบทามจากรัฐบาลสหรัฐให้ไปดูแลและปกครองรัฐ “Idaho” (ไอ๊ดะโห: ID a state in the northwestern US, which is an important producer of food, especially potatoes) ซึ่งเป็นเมืองหลักที่ผลิตมันฝรั่งของอเมริกา.

Ex: Food packets were given to malnourished patients. บรรจุภัณฑ์อาหารได้ถูกมอบให้แก่เหล่าคนป่วยที่ขาดสารอาหาร.
Ex: A survey of US households found evidence of malnutrition in those persons with the lowest incomes. การสํารวจตามบ้านของชาวอเมริกันพบหลักฐานของการขาดสารอาหารในกลุ่มบุคคลที่มี่รายได้ตํ่า. ผู้ที่มีความชํานาญและเชี่ยวชาญด้านอาหารคือพวกที่ศึกษา “Food Science” (ไซอึ่นส์) เพื่อจะเป็น “Food Nutritionist” (นูทริ๊ฉะนิสท์), แต่ถ้าการประกอบอาหารคงต้องยกให้บรรดา Chef (เฉ็ฟ).

     “When someone or one family consumes too much, the rest of country will be starving” “เมื่อใครบางคนหรือครอบครัวหนึ่งบริโภคมากเกินไป, ส่วนที่เหลือของประเทศจะอดอยาก” ผมไม่ขอบอกว่าใครคนใหนหรือครอบครัวใด, และในประเทศอะไร กําลังกินมากเหลือเกิน. คุณคิดเองเถิด. และโปรดอย่ากินทั้งหมดคนเดียว-กรุณาเผื่อแผ่และแบ่งปันให้แก่คนอื่นบ้าง, โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่ยากไร้และด้อยโอกาสมากกว่าเรา.
